p < 0.05

When conducting statistical tests to analyze data from an experiment, you will output a value known as a p-value. Generally, if p < 0.05, you conclude that the results of the experiment are significant. Here are some of the most significant moments during my college career that shaped me into the person I am today.

surviving survival analysis

Through the statistics department Directed Reading Program, I had the chance to participate in biostatistics research in my sophomore year. Working with a biostatistics PhD student, I learned about the various models and statistical tests used in survival analysis research - a field of biostatistics that focuses on measuring the time until some medical event. At the end of the quarter, I applied what I had learned to a simulated study focused on using Denosumab to reduce fracture incidence in women with osteoporosis. Through this experience, I realized how excited I was to use statistics in medical contexts, and I would love to continue to explore possible careers in clinical trials. Going into this project, I assumed biostatistics was going to be just like the pure statistics that I had been learning in my classes, but the models were completely new and foreign to me. Biostatistics is very complicated, but also beautiful and diverse. There’s so much in the field left to explore.

wait, this isn't minecraft...
I got my first internship during the summer after my sophomore year working as a statistician for the CDC in Pittsburgh, PA in the occupational health and mining division. It was so eye-opening to finally use statistics outside of the classroom while getting a glimpse into what a real career in the field could look like. I got the chance to network with other statisticians, who gave me a lot of reassurance about my academic path so far. I could really see myself in this line of work, combining both of my passions for data and health alongside a team of interdisciplinary professionals ranging from anthropologists to engineers. While I spent most of my time programming, I had the once in a lifetime opportunity to go into a mine, which gave me a new appreciation for that line of work and provided additional context for the statistics I was doing above ground. The CDC has so many divisions, each contributing to public health in unique ways that don't often get the recognition they deserve. The most exciting part of my internship was getting to move to Pittsburgh, which I learned was a beautiful city that I would have never thought to visit on my own.
hoa khôi liên trường

Hoa Khôi Liên Trường is a pageant put on by the Vietnamese Student Association every other year, and I had the privilege of being a contestant in the 2023 show. The theme of the pageant was "Phases of You," where we explored the many phases and aspects of our identity, much like the many ever-changing phases of the moon. Each week, the other 11 contestants and I met up for 2-3 hour practices, learning dances and diving deep into our identities and Asian/Vietnamese backgrounds. I've always had a strained relationship with my Vietnamese identity, but this experience and group of girls gave me so much confidence and pride in my heritage. Participating in the pageant and being on stage in front of 300 people was one of the most scary, yet most rewarding experiences of my life. It was totally out of my comfort zone, but so incredibly fun and memorable. It really pays off to just say yes and try new things. I met the strongest group of Asian women here and learned so much about myself and my background.
